A Deeper Understanding Of Home Security Comes With Reading This

Making a home safe from intruders is definitely on the top of most people’s priority lists. Unfortunately, not everyone realizes what it really takes to achieve this very important goal. Keep reading the tips and insights that follow below, and you will soon have what it takes to keep your most important investment secure.

If you have a home alarm system, make sure all the wires are concealed. If a burglar wants to break into your home, he may cut any wires he sees before following through with his plan. Depending on where the wires are, hide them with plants, rocks or other natural looking items.

Have sensors installed on all of your windows. This allows you to leave windows open when you are not home, as well as when you are sleeping, without having to worry about an intruder being able to sneak in. They are very inexpensive and can be found at your local department or hardware store.

If you use a social media site such as Facebook it can be tempting to tell everyone that you are planning to go away or are already away. Try your best not to post about being away until you are back, especially if your site is not private. You never know who could be watching and see it as an opportunity to break in.

No matter how good your security system is, it should be checked annually. Ask someone who works at the security company to do a maintenance check. Your security system’s quality can be impacted by numerous factors, such as the weather and wild animals. Sometimes it is very difficult to see the problem if you don’t know where it is.

Because so many people are numb to the sound of alarms, it is important that you have your home security system linked to the local police station. This is helpful in case you are home and can not call 911 yourself, or you are away from home during a break in.

Don’t hide your spare house key in an obvious place outside. The days of safely hiding the spare key under the doormat are long gone. Placing your key in an obvious area like this now may help you if you get locked out, but it could also be an invitation for a thief to enter your home. It’s best to avoid hiding spare keys on your property. You should either keep a spare key with a trusted neighbor or get a fingerprint or keypad door lock.

Whenever you lose one key, you must replace that lock. You never know if you actually lost it or someone who knows where you live stole it, and this puts you in peril. Even if it is a key to your car, it is important to have the lock rekeyed or replaced for your safety.

If you will be away from your home in the winter months, pay someone to shovel your driveway. This will show that you are still home, as a driveway that is not taken care of indicates there is no one there to do it. A simple 20 dollar payment to a local shoveling company can save your house from a burglary.

Use the Internet to find a reliable home security company. Browse through different websites and seek out customer reviews about different services and packages. With that information, you can make your appointments with the top three companies you’ve chosen so that you can compare pricing and look at specific monitoring and plans.

Put down a fence in your yard to secure the area that is yours and prevent burglars from coming in. Make sure that this fence is high enough so that it is very difficult for any robbers to get over it. This will add a strong layer of protection around the perimeter of your house.

If you want to have a dog at home to deter burglars, do not invest in a guard dogs. These dogs are trained to do their job and are not intended to be loving pets. Instead, pick up a dog at your local shelter, get him obedience training and give him all the love you can.

Consider cellular monitoring for your home security needs. Phone wires in a home can easily be cut by an intruder, leaving you without the protection you have paid for. A cellular monitoring system offers an extra layer of protection that is more difficult for an intruder to disengage, keeping your home and family safer.

If you are going away on a vacation, don’t brag about it to friends, co-workers or on Facebook. If you share the fact that you are going to be out of town for several days, you might come back to an empty house. Even though your friends or co-workers are totally trustworthy, you do not know who else they may inadvertently tell who may not be so honest.

To prevent burglars from snooping around your property, avoid having too any bushes or shrubs on your lawn. By keeping greenery to a bare minimum, intruders will have nowhere to hide. If you insist on having bushes or shrubs, get those with thorns; this way, intruders will get pricked if they get too close to them.

If you always turn your lights on or off at the same time, use a timer. This makes it easy for you because you do not have to turn the switch. It also makes the lights go off and on even if you are not at home.

Make sure a surveillance system is part of your home security system. A wonderful way to make your home safer is by putting in hidden or visible cameras. Also, you can capture the intruder in the act. Surveillance systems often allow you to access videos through your cell phone, too.

There is no denying the critical nature of keeping your home protected from outside intruders. The key to doing this successfully, though, is arming yourself with solid information and guidance. Hopefully the preceding article has offered you precisely the type of advice you needed to get your home security plan off the ground.
