Try Out Some Of This Important Home Security Advice

Tragedy seems to spring up without any warning. Not taking the proper home security steps and assuming that nothing will ever happen to you, can end up putting you at an increased risk. The article below contains tips and tricks to help you create a secure environment for yourself and your family.

Create the illusion that your home is constantly occupied. Keep your radio, TV and lights on timers. This way it will always look as if someone is home, even when you are away. This is great for keeping a home safer from burglaries.

Why not give your trusted dog the job of holding onto your spare key? In order to make this work, your dog either needs to stay outside or have access to a pet door. Latch the key on his collar and voila–you have a spare key available!

Do you keep your dog outside when you aren’t home? They can help you with your spare key. Find a place to securely fasten the key to your pet’s collar where it’s not visible. This works especially well as storage if your pet isn’t too fond of strangers.

Good home security systems sound a loud alarm when breached, and that’s not all. Most security systems can facilitate alarm sounds anyone enters. This is useful for parents who have small kids, as it helps keep them from leaving the house.

Before agreeing to work with a security company, check with your friends and family for recommendations. Knowledge of first-hand experiences can be very helpful to you when it comes to making this important decision. Make sure to ask neighbors for advice too.

When planning to go away for a holiday, be sure to turn off the ringers on your home phones. A ringing phone that goes unanswered may signal to a burglar that nobody is home.

Don’t let any person you don’t completely know into your house. There are some people who are very convincing and good at getting you to let them into your house. Some folks will enter to scout for security systems, and upon seeing you lack one, will resolve to return at a later time.

Clear away all the dead and dried out vegetation around your home in the summer. These could catch on fire during the summer, especially if you live in a dry area. Clear yard regularly to maintain your house safe.

Get to know your neighbors. Converse with those living in your area. Agree to watch each other’s homes while you are away. Never neglect gossip. You might hear helpful information, for instance if strangers have been hanging around.

Walls are a good place to hide things. If you need to protect expensive items in your home, put them inside the walls. Just open up an electrical outlet or a phone jack that is not in use. If you use all of them, you can always have fake ones installed.

Keep your most valuable possessions inside your walls. This doesn’t necessarily involve chopping up your walls, either. Your home should have a few pre-cut areas that can be used. You could removed the wiring from an electric socket that you aren’t using, and stash jewelry inside it.

Ensure that valuables are stored in a hidden area that isn’t visible from outside your home. If you have big windows near your big entertainment system, it can seem like an invitation to thieves. You should cover any windows that are facing the street so your valuables will be safe.

Lock the house, even if just going away for a short time. Surprisingly, lots of burglaries occur because the burglar was able to simply walk in without having to actually break in. Thieves can make off with large amounts of valuable merchandise very quickly.

You want an alarm system that protects more than your doors. Burglars often enter through windows as well. If you have an alarm attached to each of your windows and doors, you can keep track of all the entry points for your home. They are the most effective.

After installing a security system in your home, make sure any wires are hidden. If the wires are exposed, an intruder can bypass the system by cutting its wires. Hide them in the walls or bury them underground to keep people from tampering with them. You’ll be safer.

Make sure all the wood around your doors is in great shape. Home invaders interested are able to pry off any rotted wood to get inside. Replace rotted wood with fresh wood to make your home safer.

Get a paper shredder. You’d be shocked at how many times thieves search trash looking for personal documents to see when you’re not home so that they can get into your home. If you can’t afford to buy a paper shredder, tear your papers up into tiny bits before throwing them away.

If a friend picks up your mail while you’re away, have them check for fliers on your door. Burglars sometimes place fliers as a means to see if anyone is home to remove them. If the flier is not removed, it’s easy for a burglar to suspect that the owner is away.

Can you read your house numbers while in the street? If your house numbers are not easy to see, the police may have difficulty finding you in an emergency. If you notice a problem, you should be able to fix it fairly cheaply, though.

Ask about the different contract durations that a security company can offer you. There are of course pros and cons for each contract. With a longer contract, your monthly payment is likely to be lower. The downside is you might be stuck for a longer period of time if you decide you don’t like the service or want to move. Shorter contracts offer greater freedom, but may be more expensive each month.

Burglars are not predictable, so you never know if you have become a target. Instead of just hoping it will not happen to you, take the steps to secure your home. Use these tips, plus your own research, to give your home protection from burglars.
